Can I get a dual degree in Animal behavior and Wildlife Biology?
I want to work with animals but I find that wildlife Biology and Animal Behavior are very interesting. I know that the pay is not all that great.Thats not why I wish to do this. I just wanted to know is there anyone out there who can help me decide in if a degree in both areas would be worth it. I am looking at perhaps working for state parks and or zoo's. Any help if accurate help would be greatly appreicated.Thanks
Well, I'm not sure how all universities handle wildlife biology and animal behavior. In fact, my university doesn't offer Animal Behavior as a major, but it is a class for Wildlife Biology students (actually, there are two Wildlife behavior classes at my school-- one in the wildlife department focusing on behavioral ecology, and one in the psych department that deals more with lab experiments on mice and such).
At first I thought you said, "Animal science," which it would be very hard to double-major in, since all the classes are different. Animal science deals mainly with domestic animals and their anatomy, nutrition, and care, rather than ecology which is the primary focus of Wildlife Biology. Animal behavior should be much easier to double major in, if I can guess anything from the way my Animal behavior class was run... If Animal Behavior as a major is taught in terms of behavioral ecology, there should be plenty of overlap of classes with wildlife biology. If it is taught from a domestic-animal perspective, it might be much harder to double it.
Zoos and state parks are very different places to work. Working as a zookeeper, you'd be better off learning Animal behavior or Animal Science. Working at a state park, you'd be better off learning Wildlife biology, Environmental Science, or Forestry. My university even has a "Recreation Management" program that might be useful for getting a job at a state park.
I may be biased, as a Wildlife student, but I think Wildlife Biology is the better choice if you're torn between both options. Zoos need staff that are trained in ecology and environmental sciences as well as they need people who are trained in handling animals. State parks, on the other hand, would find a person trained in ecology/wildlife biology much more useful than someone trained in animal care/animal science/behavior.
